We Proved Them Wrong.
Zero bills in Trump's first term. Two landmark immigrant protection bills now. Help us raise $5,000 by midnight tomorrow.

During the entirety of Donald Trump's first term in office, the Massachusetts legislature passed zero bills to protect immigrants. Hundreds of people testified in favor of the Safe Communities Act. Parents, workers, faith leaders, and community organizers came to the State House and told their stories. The legislature killed the bill in committee behind closed doors, with no recorded vote and no accountability.

That silence is what brought me into this fight. I co-founded Act on Mass because I believed that if voters could see what their legislators were doing, they would demand better. We ran ballot questions across dozens of districts asking one question: should committee votes be public? We won with an average of 87% support. There are no shortcuts. We organized, we advocated, and we built power. And we won: today, all votes taken by legislators are publicly available.
If you believe in that kind of leadership, please chip in $10 or $25 today to help us raise $5,000 by tomorrow, June 30 at midnight.

That same inside-outside strategy is what we brought to the fight for immigrant protections. Late last year, some lawmakers on Beacon Hill said there was little the state could do about Trump's immigration policy because the federal government controls that area. I refused to accept that answer. And I, alongside many of you, made our demands clear.
This time, we proved them wrong. Two immigrant protection bills have now advanced out of committee and through both chambers: the PROTECT Act, which restricts state and local cooperation with ICE, and the Consumer Data Privacy Act, which bans the sale of precise geolocation data, blocking ICE from purchasing your phone's location to track where you go. This is devastatingly how ICE has been able to track down our immigrant neighbors.

When they said making all votes public is impossible, I didn't wait quietly. I helped drive the inside-outside strategy that delivered it. As a senator, I will do the same thing: build coalitions, push early, and make it harder for leadership to say no to what our communities need.
